Regular Gmail Account and Google Apps; What's the Difference?
By indraneel
What’s the difference between a regular Gmail account and Google Apps email? You mean, the interface is similar and one can still access Docs, Wave, Calendar and all! Seriously, what extra features does Google Apps provide, and do you really need them?
I’ll start with a personal example. After I finished my Masters I wanted to get into a job, so I put up a profile in a popular job site. In the reply mail I got there were instructions about how to avoid hoax job offers. The most important and striking feature of a fake job advertisement is that they carry free email id’s… like @gmail.com or @yahoo.com and so on. They advised me to stay away from any job offer that didn’t have the company’s name as the domain address.
So, there you go. If you are running a business and want to recruit online, your gmail account will put you on the list of counterfeit suspects.
Yes, Google Apps is for business and official institutions. And it’s most important feature is that it gives you a custom domain name; like if you own a company name xyz, everyone involved with the company will get a @xyz.com email id. This gives your company an official stature in online business, and makes it easier for other companies to contact you.
That was for the appearance part. Now for the in-built features that are fully customized- and indeed essential- for your company’s IT needs.
Google Apps Premier edition comes with 25 GB storage for each user. It’s the best in the industry. In time when amount of important data will increase, this feature will come really handy and save you a lot of deleting or archiving.
Also, it comes with a control panel from which your IT administrator can exercise full control over the entire data flow… another handy feature that helps you make sure your sensitive corporate data is properly organized in the right places.
Mind you, with a regular gmail account you get to manage only one email id. With Google Apps you can handle a bunch of email ids active under your domain. If your company runs a considerable proportion of its business via the web, a proper Google Apps account is a must have for you.
